Sažetak
Whiting, Merlangius merlangus is rather uncommon species in the Adriatic Sea, occuring numerously only in its northernmost part. It is found in shallow water, usually between 30 and 100m, over the sandy and muddy ground. Young specimens live closer to the shore, between 5 and 30 m depth. Dana on seks ratio, length-weight relationship, age, growth and mortality were analysed for total of 540 specimens (males = 258 ; females = 282) collected from the trawl catches in the north-eastern Adriatic area (west Istrian coast) during the reproductive period (December, January and February) from 2002 to 2003. The total length of sampled specimens ranged from 16.0 to 32.4 cm and the weight from 16.1 to 282 g. The overall seks ratio was 1.09 in favour of females. The oldest collected females and males were 7 years old (females: 2º ; = 17.52, 3º ; = 21.35, 4º ; = 25.67, 5º ; = 28.43, 7º ; = 32.2 cm ; males: 2º ; = 16.75, 3º ; = 20.34, 4º ; = 24.39, 5º ; = 27.77, 6º ; = 29.34, 7º ; = 31.5 cm) The von Bertalanffy growth formula was estimated for females (L∞ = 39.16 ; k = 0.232 ; t0 = -0.524), males (L∞ = 40.34 ; k = 0.199 ; t0 = -0.653) and both sexes (L∞ = 39.28 ; k = 0.217 ; t0 = -0.606). The slopes (b values) of total length-weight regressions indicated allometric growth for males (b = 3.159 ; r2 = 0.9548) and females (b = 2.946 ; r2 = 0.9411) and isometric growth for both sexes (b = 3.028 ; r2 = 0.9454). Natural mortality was found to be M = 0.44 year-1, fishing mortality F = 0.82 year-1 and total mortality Z = 1.26 year-1 (Z/k = 5.806). The exploitation rate E = 0.65 suggests that the stock of whiting was highly exploited in the northern Adriatic area.
