Sažetak
The growth of living standard, combined with the growth of free time, affects the increasing number of people included in tourist activities. The contemporary tourist is a demanding and an active consumer, more and more ecologically and socially conscious. He expects a tourist destination to provide him not only the possibility to rest, but also some new experiences and knowledge. A more and more important element in terms of its attractiveness for modern tourists refers to the environmental protection of a tourist destination, along with its original supply. The stated trends indicate the importance and wide range of possibilities regarding the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in considering the tourist destination development. Considering that the concept of sustainable development embraces different aspects (economic, environmental, social), the authors have chosen to concentrated their research on the contribution of local population to environmental protection of a tourist destination. Namely, the local population, together with their size, knowledge, abilities and active engagement, represents the most important factor of redirecting the tourist destination toward sustainability. The important preconditions include the knowledge, information and motivation of the local population for a long-tem quality economic, social and overall development. The authors studied the attitudes and concrete engagement of the local inhabitants in the environmental protection, taking the Istrian Country as the most developed tourist country in Croatia as a case study. The survey was based on the stratificated sample of 430, i.e. 1% of the households in the chosen places in the Istrian Country, which recorded the biggest number of tourist arrivals in the last decade ; an anonymous questionnaire was used. The results indicate that the local population possesses insufficient knowledge and is insufficiently engaged in the environmental protection.
