Sažetak
The EU enlargement strategy is a key determinant of the EU's future development and an important factor of modern integration processes in Europe. The countries of Southeastern Europe - Western Balkan (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Republic of Macedonia) see themselves as a part of the strategy since the EU defined contractual relations with them through so-called Stabilization and Association Agreements (SAA). This paper aims to analyze existing relations between the EU and Western Balkan countries. It will examine the SAA’ s characteristics and emphasize some mutual interests, differences in motives and expected conclusions. The research will be focused on the economic development of Southeastern European region, the foreign trade of Western Balkan countries with the accent on regional orientation towards the EU and the EU's financial aid to these countries. A special weight will be set on the problems (restrictions) in the cooperation: a gap in the economic development, differences in the export supply of these countries and the EU's import demands, and unstableness in the region which affects investment risks. The author will lay emphasis on the measures required for restructuring of the Western Balkan countries economy and closer cooperation with the EU.
