Sažetak
The first cochlear implantation in Croatia was performed in June 1996 at the Dept. of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital in cooperation with the SUVAG Polyclinic and it was done completely independently from assistance of outside experts. Immediately after the first child, two years old rehabilitant from the SUVAG Polyclinic was operated, and that was the beginning of the Croatian cochlear implantaion program in children. From the very beginning both cooperating institutions connected with the 30 years long tradition of very productive cooperation, have had the complete program of preoperative procedures with a candidate. The first period lasted three years and final successful outcomes have been splendidly met not only by professional public. As a result of high media attention, new cochlear implantation program has become known all over Croatia. The unbridgeable obstacle was total absence of systematic financing of this medically extremely expensive program. That is why for the next few years we have planned, arranged and performed two completely specific operative procedures: auditory brainstem implantation (1999) and bilateral cochlear implantation (2000). These operations have been extraordinarily successful. At that time in most part of Europe they have not been performed and in some of the most developed countries they were only news. The public interest was stimulated again and we have proved that our institutions are competent enough to reach the highest level in the area of medical treatment of deafness. This was the second period of our program. In the third period, after our various initiatives, the Ministry of Croatian Defenders from Croatian War of Independence launched a relief drive to the aid of deaf children "Anamarija in the World of Sounds" (2001) which was superbly organized, and our clinic and the SUVAG Polyclinic were equally successful in performing it. This event, excellently accepted by the public, has been crucial for further course and today's status of cochlear implantation in Croatia.
