Sažetak
Croatian LIS schools are growing in number and variety of programs, following the needs of students and LIS staff that lack appropriate professional education. At the moment there are two LIS schools in Croatia – the older one, at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, which has its roots in the 70-ies, and the younger one, at the Faculty of Philosophy in Osijek, which was founded in the 90-ies. The third LIS School situated in Zadar will enroll the first generation in September 2004. This Zadar LIS school grew up from the dislocated library part-time program (started in 2000) offered to librarians from Dalmatian region by the Osijek LIS school. As a result of a significant geographical distance, as well as very poor traffic connections between West and East of Croatia, the Osijek faculty started thinking about distance education and the possibilities of implementing it in its curriculum. The need for distance education was further intensified by the fact that students were, although all from the Dalmatian region, geographically scattered, employed, had families, and many of them lived on islands in the Adriatic Sea and their attendance depended on ferry time-table as well as on weather conditions.
