Sažetak
Audio transmission was one of the first telecommunications services, but for a long time it was restricted to narrow band voice communications. Advances in digital technology enable high quality audio delivery over multimedia networks through the use of advanced coding and compression techniques. This paper presents MPEG audio compression scheme that is widely used for audio data delivery over multimedia networks and some aspects of transporting MPEG coded audio over ATM networks. First we discuss psychoacoustic effects that are exploited in MPEG audio coding which help greatly reduce data quantity produced in audio digitalization process. Next, we discuss basic aspects of MPEG audio coding. Finally, ATM quality of service aspects and ATM adaptation layer best suited for MPEG coded audio delivery over ATM network are described.
