Sažetak
The paper deals with the problem of how to obtain useful images of natural and manmade objects through smoke, haze and especially at night, by the method of thermal imaging. The interaction of atmospheric phenomena of reflection, refraction, absorption and scattering with transmitted radiation gives rise to three so called windows of infra-red radiation. The paper also specifies components used in a thermal imager: windows, optics, scanners, detectors, coolers and electronics. Solid state images provide a genuine possibility of "seeing in the dark" and their applications for the purposes of marine surveillance by Bridge and Operation Rooms are likely to come into service.
