Sažetak
The aim of the investigation was to analyse the secular trend of mortality from cerebrovasculari diseases (CVD) in Croatia and its regional characteristics. Neuroepidemiological studies of stroke are very important for correct programming and planning of health service and its specific organisation. The research comprised all deaths from CVD in Croatia in persons between 35 and 74 years of age over the period of 1958-1997. The total number of deaths in that period increased by 40% while the number of deaths from CVD increased by 264%. The number of all deaths in the population aged 35-74 in Croatia by 5-years periods rose from 18.913 on 26.788 ( increase of 41, 64%), deaths of CVD from 2.831 on 3.959 (increase of 39.48%). At the same time, the rates standardized by age and sex increased by 62%. The proportional moirtality rate for this disease increased from 9, 0% in 1958 to 14.8% in 1997. The specific mortality rates over a 5-year period have shown a trend of increase in all male age groups and stagnation or decrease in females. A cohort data analysis has shown that, although mortality trends of CVD stagnated or even declined in some communities during the recent years, the secular trend for the entire country hadd a tendency of conostant rise over the whole period of the research. Therefore, the short-term prognosis predicts further increase of both the number and the rate od deaths from CVD in our country.
