Sažetak
The organism struggles to maintain homeostatic balance by investing resources in maintenance and repair, and in the processes that collectively span resistance to environmental stress, damage, and disease. This struggle becomes more and more difficult with age. This campaign is ultimately waged at the level of individual cells. However, these cells do not exist in a vacuum. Instead, they influence each other, frequently at a distance. It is becoming clear that the aging organism is subjected to chronic stress with a concomitant decline in the ability to respond to acute stress. Both mitotic and post-mitotic cell populations are subject to this waning vitality. In post-mitotic cells, the result is frequently degenerative, leading to cell death.
