Sažetak
Grade 5 learners of EFL were tested by means of a cognitively and linguistically demanding task - retelling a story. The analysis of one hundred stories distinguished three group of learners. The first group consisted of balanced bilinguals who told complex and coherent stories, linguistically and conceptually very similar across the two languages. The second group consisted of children whose L1 stories were better than their L2 stories, grammatical mistakes and lack of appropriate vocabulary being the main source of poorer quality of the L2 stories. However, when the L1 stories of this group were compared with the L1 stories of the first group, they too showed to be less coherent, and linguistically and conceptually simpler. This is even more true of the third group of learners who were unsuccessful in retelling the story in L2, and only partly successful in retelling the story in L1. The main purpose of this paper is to explore different aspects of parallelism and language interaction between L1 and L2 stories, with the aim of shedding more light on bilingual language processing at different levels of bilingual proficiency.
