Sažetak
Progressive removal of lead from gasoline frequently requires an increase of operating severity in catalytic reforming, which is the major source of aromatics in gasoline, and consequently its octane number. This paper discusses the effect of increased process severity on the gasoline characteristics, especially research octane number (RON) and benzene content. The experiments were carried out at space velocity from 2.7 to 5.4 1/h, at temperature of 505 and 525 C, operating pressure of 1.2 MPa, using commercial Pt-Re/Al_2O_3 catalyst. The results show that the increase of operating severity caused an increase of the research octane number, as a result of the higher aromatic concentration in the reformate. The adverse effects of higher operating severity were the increase of benzene content and the significant reduction in the yield of liquid products. The results confirm the need for catalytic reforming operation at lower severity in order to meet new gasoline requirements for environmental protection.
