Sažetak
In the period from 1993 to 1998 five field experiments were conducted with aim of testing corn genotypes response on different soils of the eastern Croatia as follows: S1 (strong K-fixation), S2 (moderate P supply), S3 (normal soil), S4 (moderate P supply) and S5 (moderate P supply). Soil and plant samples were taken for chemical analysis. The harmful elements (Sr, Hg, Pb and Cd) were determined by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) technique after microwave digestion using conc. HNO3+H2O2. Plant available elements in soil were extracted by 1m NH4-Acetate+EDTA (pH 4.65) solution. Aim of this study was testing level of soil and plant contamination with some harmful elements (He, Cd, Pb and Sr) under conditions of the Eastern Croatia with emphasis on differences among maize genotypes. The harmful elements monitoring, particularly Cd, Hg and Pb, have become important for environmental protection. Their critical concentrations in plants and diet of animals (in the brackets) are as follows: 5-10 (0.5-1) ppm Cd, 2-5 (1) ppm Hg and 10-20 (10-30) ppm Pb. Concentrations of these elements in the higher plants normally vary between 0.2 and 3.00 ppm Cd, 0.01 and 0.02 ppm Hg, 2 and 7 ppm Pb. High Sr contents in plants and diet are also toxic. Their toxicity is mainly induced by mimicking of lighter essential elements in uptake and metabolism (for example, Cd by Zn, Pb and Sr by Ca).By our testing very low amounts of harmful elements were found and these findings are an indication of the clear and healthy environment. Mercury (Hg) quantities in plant and soil were under detectable range (detection limit for Hg: 0.25 mg Hg kg-1).
