Sažetak
An on-line LC-GC method involving a single LC silica column for sample preparation and GC transfer through the in-line vaporiser/overflow interface was applied to analyse the paraffinic fraction of a large number of different kinds of seed oils and virgin olive oils. Although most of the seed oils analysed showed mineral oil contamination characterised by one or more “ hump” of isoalkane which cannot be resolved by GC, it was possible to quantify natural n-alkane content (peaks on the top of the “ hump” ). Results obtained showed that these components represent a good fingerprint for a given seed oil. The ratio between the sum of alkanes with odd carbon number and the sum of those with even carbon number also revealed to be a promising parameter to distinguish different type of seed oils. As reported in some papers, natural aliphatic hydrocarbon profile of virgin olive oils can be used to differentiate oils obtained from diverse varieties ; it could be a useful parameter for recent trends in virgin olive oil production directed at promoting typical products also in regard of geographic origin. Virgin olive oil samples obtained from three different Croatian varieties (Leccino, Bjelica, Busa) were analysed for endogenous n-alkane content. In order to investigate in what measure n-alkane content depends of the ripeness of olives and how they are influenced by meteorological variations in different years, olive samples were collected during 4 years at different stage of ripening. Results showed characteristic patterns for the different varieties ; among samples of a given variety it was possible to distinguish oil samples produced in different years and different areas. For most of the samples analysed no appreciable differences were observed at different stage of ripening. As demonstrated by repeatability and recovery trials, LC-GC allows to perform accurate analysis of the n-alkane fraction in a short time. The information obtained with this rapid analysis regards both possible contamination with mineral oils residues and oil characterisation.
