Selection of biological specimens for drug-abuse testing, toxicokinetics of more common drugs of abuse and recommended analytical techniques for their determination are presented. The advantages and the disadvantages of the biological specimens with respect to availability, ease of collection, and the amount of information that can be obtained from their analysis are discussed. Only the concentration of drugs of abuse in blood and saliva can be correlated more closely with drug-induced effects. Any exposure to a drug of abuse must be recent for the drug to be detected in blood, saliva, sweat, or urine. Only hair analysis can provide information on drug abuse dating months back, which depends on the length of one's hair. Knowledge of the toxicokinetics of drugs of abuse is important for interpreting the obtained results, for estimating the duration of detectability upon drug abuse. Therefore, basic information of the more common drugs of abuse that is relevant to their determination in urine is given. && Our own experience in determination of drugs of abuse in urine and hair by GC-MS is presented. The importance of internal and external quality control is emphasized.
