Sažetak
Constant growth of traffic in the world has resulted in traffic congestions on the roads that connect major cities, as well as in air traffic by increasing delays due to traffic saturation of certain air corridors. The forecasts predict an even greater increase of traffic in the future. The predictions claim that the growth of road and air traffic will be greater than the growth of railway traffic. Regarding the possible consequences of such a trend in the development of traffic, it is necessary to undertake measures that would result in the redistribution of traffic split in favour of the railways. The work studies the basic features of single traffic branches and highlights the advantages of the railways compared to other branches of traffic. This emphasises the energy consumption, emission of harmful components, costs of the environment, safety and traffic surface requirements. It analyses the elements of railways that have to be improved in the future and the way in which this has to be done in order to make the railways competitive with other branches of traffic. Special attention is oriented to the railway vehicles and the possibility of their modernisation. The emphasis is on passenger transport, especially referring to high-speed trains and levitating rail vehicles with comparison analyses of their technical and exploitation characteristics.
