Sažetak
Landscape management, particularly with respect to land resources, requires availability of good-quality and reliable information, primarily through Geographic Information Systems, which ensure rapid, detailed and complete data processing. Development of GIS technology in the Republic of Croatia in the last decade made it possible to the process pedological and other data through information systems, the use of which enables processing of all required information. GIS has become a highly significant and practically irreplaceable system for displaying and processing information and Croatia has adopted it as a modern basis of land and agricultural resources management. Namely, GIS technology has been intensively developed and applied at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, since 1995. A large number of projects, both at national and regional levels, have been implemented to date. Very important regional projects are the Land Information Systems (LIS), which have so far been produced for six of the overall 20 counties. Although the said LIS were primarily designed for the needs of agricultural development, they represent a type of information also indispensable for many other activities, such as regional planning, environmental protection, forestry, water management, civil engineering, etc. Hence, LIS can be rightly regarded as one of the major prerequisites of further development of the regions in the Republic of Croatia. The paper presents the method of designing Land Information Systems in Croatia on the example of Virovitica– Podravina County, details the structure of the information system with multi-purpose land evaluation, and describes the ways of procuring the necessary information.
