Sažetak
The main traffic problems of modern cities in developing countries can be detected very easily: insufficient road networks and lack of space to expand existing road networks, lack of parking places and facilities, non-functional public transport and inappropriate conditions for non- motorized traffic, etc. In those cities that do have tourist perspectives and possibilities these problems could present serious obstacles for development. This traffic situation and these problems can be detected in many middle-sized (50, 000 habitants and more) Croatian towns near the Adriatic coast. The problem is that the biggest percentage of tourists come as individual guests and with their own cars. In those cities traffic problems exist permanently, but they are most evident during the tourist season (summer) or connected with some special events when traffic volumes tend to increase considerably. In this paper basic connections between the development of tourism and one of the most important segments in the city traffic offer, parking, are discussed. The paper also gives an example of the proposed traffic strategy for the towns of Rijeka and Zadar, presenting the possible models for solving traffic problems connected with parking in the mid-sized towns (50, 000 habitants and more) that, apart from other functions, also act as tourist resorts.
