Sažetak
The paper presents the main European projects in the field of train protection, with the aim of achieving technical harmo-nisation of the European railways. Great diversity of railway technical systems in Europe results from the fact that three track gauges are used, several systems of electric traction, numerous different signalling and safety devices, and all this causes trains to have to stop at the interface points of different technical systems. The founding of the European Union eliminated the political borders, and by standardisation and harmonisation of railway systems UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de Per) is trying to eliminate technical borders as well. Within the framework of UIC projects for infrastructure, the biggest and most important project is the European Rail Train Management System (ERTMS). The key projects, from the technical point of view, incorporated in ERTMS are the European Train Control System - ETCS, and the GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communication - Railway) or the total mobile communication system for railway. ETCS is a project of train control with the aim of harmonising the current systems, such as ATP (Automatic Train Protection) and ATC (Automatic Train Control), and it should allow fast and safe control of trains without technical restrictions, in compliance with the new geo-political picture of Europe. An important pan of the ERTMS project is the standardisation and usage of a unique digital radio network GSM-R, for railways which will combine, on a unique platform all the existing and all the new possibilities of radio network control, which in turn can be realised by using a digital transformation system, and they refer to speed control, automatic train control, radio-network management of traffic, radio-network supported maintenance, etc.
