Sažetak
Partial hepatectomy (pHx) induces fast liver growth, which involves extra and intracellular factors resulting in cell replication untill the entire liver mass is restored. At the same time exsposure of self-antigens activate pre-immune and immune repertoire, which eliminate aberrant and superfluous cells in proliferating liver tissue. AIM: To investigate the influence of olive and corn-oil enriched diet, containing different quantities of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated acids (PUFA), on regenerating liver and lymphatic organs. METHODS: 2-4 months old BALB/c mice were fed olive and corn-oil enriched diets (5% addition to standard pellet, w/w) during the three weeks and then subjected to 1/3 pHx. Control group were fed standard pellet during the same period. Mice were sacrificed one, 2, 7, and 21 days later. Liver, spleen and thymus tissue content of Zn, Fe, Mg and Ca was determined using microwave digestion and ICP spectrometry. RESULTS: Partial hepatectomy significantly affected tissue content of Zn, Fe, Mg and Ca, which was further modified by the different diets. In the early phase of liver growth Zn and Ca accumulated in the liver and decreased in the thymus and spleen. On the 7th and 21st day after pHx there was a marked accumulation of Zn, Mg and Ca in thymus particularly. In mice fed olive oil enriched diet, containing primarily oleic acid, and corn oil with predominant linoleic acid, Zn accumulation was significantly lower in the liver, while the increase in Ca and Mg was observed on the 2nd day in thymus. Olive oil enriched diet had greater effect on Zn, Ca and Mg turnover in thymus, in contrast to corn oil enriched diet which affected Zn and Ca content in the spleen. Furthermore, in mice fed corn oil enriched diet, a high correlation was found between the zinc concentration in the thymus and remnant liver mass, pointing the possibility of Zn-dependent hepato-thymic axis role in the activation and restrain of fast liver growth induced by pHx. CONCLUSIONS: The data imply that diets containing different MUFA and PUFA content may modulate normal growth process by direct or indirect changes in the regenerating tissue, as well in lymphatic organs, where tissue mineral content might influence several aspects of immunity (degree of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, activities of metalloproteinases, signal transduction pathways, cytokine production etc.)
