Sažetak
Along the eastern coast and islands of the Adriatic sea, larger accumulations of near shore, shallow marine Holocene sediments occur on several localities. Makirina cove, approximately 1100 m in length and 300 m in width, extends from Pirovac Bay towards SW and it represents a shallow marine depositional environment. As a consequence of sea level rise during the Holocene, the depression of Makirina was inundated by the sea ingression at approximately 4500 y B.P. which marks the begining of the sedimentation. During the period, more than 3 m of sediments have been depositedin the central part of the Makirina Cove. There is a gradual increase of the sediment thickness (0, 00->3m) from the coast towards the central part of the Makirina Cove. The mineralogical composition of the sediments reveals 61% (mean value) of none-carbonate minerals and 39% (mean value) of carbonate minerals. Within the non-carbonate fraction, minerals from metamorphic rock prevail over the minerals of volcanic rocks. According to sedimentological and balneological analysis, the sediments of Makirina Cove are classified as healing muds, i. e. peloids with great potential in medical application. The overall reserves of the peloids are estimated at 400000 m3. The composition of sedimentary organic matter is rather consistent with the biological relations of this moderately eutrophicated ecosystem. Low concentrations of the elements Al, Co, Ni, Pb and Zn are related to clay minerals, whereas Si, Cr, Hf, and Zr sre related to resistent heavy minerals and quartz. Cobcentrations of Se indicate that they are within usual background rangesfrom this type of sediments. The use of these peloids for medical purpose is not limited However, in the southern coastal part of Makirina Cove, higher values of Pb, Zr and Ni originatethrough antrophogenic influence, most probably due to higway traffic. In addition, higher concentrations of Cu most likely originate from the agriculture activety in the costal area.
