Sažetak
OBJECTIVE – This study was performed in order to determine reasons for tooth extraction among the military and civilian population during the war in Croatia. METHODS – Data from dental records of a military dental clinic located on the first front line was used. Subjects were divided in three age groups (18-29, 30-39, 40-49), according to International Classification of Diseases. For statistical analysis we used χ 2-test. RESULTS - Civilians exhibited more extractions due to decay or periodontal disease (p<0, 05), which related to trauma and endodontal and periapical disease in the army (p<0, 05). Over 90% of extractions of the military population was due to dental caries. There were no significant differences between left and right side of the moth and between maxillary and mandibular teeth. CONCLUSIONS - Main causes of tooth loss in the military are negligence and lack of free time for complex therapy, (endodontic, periodontal, or prosthodontic treatment). There is the need for education of both military personnel and military dentists.
