Sažetak
The paper is an introduction to the name studies from a perspective of European studies. The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of linguistic unity and diversity of Europe from the onomastic point of view. Important aspects of interlinguistic and intercultural onomastics are analyzed, especially the structure and function of names in the social and cultural context. Since names in general, both place-names and personal names, form an important aspect of linguistic and cultural heritage of Europe, the paper gives some basic overview of name-giving patterns in various European countries, with a certain emphasis on Croatian onomastics.
