Sažetak
Strengthening democracy in transition societies was analysed within the social capital theory, model of post-materialist change and situational reaction model. EVS data from the wave 1999-2000 were used. Several conclusions were emphasized: orientation toward democracy is strong, but capacities are strongly influenced by performance of actual government, trust in political institutions is probably part of government evaluation (especially in transition countries), there are no evidence for the thesis of different modernization paths, advance in democracy have no correlates without government performance estimation.
