Sažetak
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological condition affecting sensory and motor nerve transmission. Its progression and symptoms are unpredictable and vary from person to person as well as over time. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and the severity of muscle palpation tenderness in Multiple Sclerosis patients. Methods: 50 subjects, 43 women and 7 men, with definite MS according to McDonald criteria participated in this study. The control group consisted of 50 subjects who were matched according to gender and age with multiple sclerosis patients. Assesment of extraoral and intraoral masticatory mascles was performed by means of bilateral palpation for pain and tenderness according to the RDC/TMD specifications. Depending on tenderness the possible response was a three point scale: 0-no pain, 1-mild pain and 2-severe pain. Results: MS group had significantly higher numbers of masticatory muscle tendernes upon palpation compared to the control group (p<0, 001). The mean values and standard deviation of myofascial pain scores were 8, 4 – 9, 4 for the MS group and 1, 3 – 1, 9 for the control group. Conclusion: The Multiple Sclerosis group had a high prevalence of muscle palpation tenderness compared to the controls.
