Sažetak
This case-control study was aimed at investigating possible genotoxic impact of video display terminals (VDUs) on occupationally exposed personnel. For that purpose, whole blood sample of 15 healthy donors and 15 matched controls was collected and processed according to the standard IAEA protocol for conventional structural chromosomal aberration (CA) analysis. The aforementioned biomonitoring was accompanied by ambiental monitoring in terms of physical measurements of electromagnetic (EM fields) generated by personal computer (PC) screeens. Chromosomal aberrational analysis revealed the percentage of cells containing CA in the exposed group to be 1, 43 % vs 1, 16 % in the controls. Physical measurements revealed the exposure parameters on each workplace to be far bellow maximal permissible levels recommended by CENELEC and IRPA/INIRC standards. Incidence and type of chromosomal aberrations obtained in the exposed group showed no significant difference when compared to the Croatian general population background. However, it would be recommendable to follow-up such occupational categories, in case long-term cumulative effect of low-dose exposure should occur.
