Sažetak
The article analyses the relationship between the language of punishment and the public space in Dubrovnik from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 19th century. It overviews justice sites and explains their function in civic life. Already at the beginning of the 15th century, penal rituals started to adapt to the urban setting, and to refer to the symbolic meaning of the place where they were carried out. The author demonstrates that the long process of final settlement of the punitive rituals and the consecutive reduction of the stages of justice, relates to a more general process of the birth of the modern state, a state that aims at emanating a consistent image of its power.
