Sažetak
Europe is the main tourist destination region in the world, accounting for 59% of the international tourist arrivals and 52% of tourism revenues, but this region is losing its market share. Europe is also the main generating market in the world, expected to increase its predominance with a reinforcement of long-distance outbound travels. The forecasts tell that Europe will register 717 million incoming international tourists in 2020, against the current 386 million, showing an average 3% annual growth rate, below the world total, i.e., 4% per annum (World Tourism Organization). Thus, Europe is expected to see its market share fall further to 46%. Moreover, the intra-European movement will register a significant reduction of its participation in the total destinations chosen by Europeans from the current 87 to 78% for 2020. Tourism industry is an essential economic activity in the EU in terms of GDP, employment, and external service trade. Tourism currently holds 5.5 per cent of the EU GDP, 6% of employment, and 30% of services exports. The EU will keep obtaining annual growth rates on tourism above the average rates of the economy. Furthermore, it is admitted that tourism in the next decade may generate up to 3.3 million jobs in the European Union. The European Union countries absorb 68% of tourism movements (75% of tourism revenues) in Europe and 41% of the total world flows (39% of the world global amount). The paper analyzes Croatia’ s position as a receptive tourist country, providing for remarks with regard to the possible developmental possibilities in the EU market niche. The proposed realistic and integrated approach to the tourism industry in the context of the European Union leads to the following eight key actions: 1. Integrated approach to the tourism industry in the European Union ; 2. Political recognition of the European tourism industry ; 3. Tourism promotion in the third countries ; 4. Realization of effects of Euro’ s introduction through the tourism industry ; 5. Tourism industry’ s contribution to the European employment strategy and human resources qualification ; 6. Information society’ s opportunities in the tourism area ; 7. Liberalization of transport and its impacts on tourism ; 8. Bet on a sustainable development and quality.
