Sažetak
The increasing concern for environmental protection, particularly in the planning and design of road networks and particular road section, require a continuous process of detailed assessment of the interaction between the roads and environment. The current relationship between roads and environment has been established by extensive investigations in order to determine the type and intensity of negative impacts and the protective zones for each section and for the road network as a whole. The type and intensity of impacts obtained by a carefully prepared investigation procedure for each pollution type are compared to the existing national and international standards and criteria. Accordingly, it is possible to estimate the present interaction between the roads and environment. The planning and design of a road network, within the urban and physical planning documentation, often implies hazardous environmental effects ; hence, all these negative effects should be estimated cautiously in order to build roads respecting natural and cultural values. Particular attention should be paid to the protected zones (archaeological monuments, water-protection zones, agricultural zones, forests, etc.) so that detailed investigations should be carried out in order to define their exact boundaries and to select an optimal route without any negative environmental effects. In order to estimate all these threats to the environment it is necessary to develop computer models and to determine standards for each pollution type.
