Sažetak
The above is the Internet site of the Tourism Management Information System popularly known as TourMIS. Although it is similar to the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) and the Eurostat, its main contribution is in the fact that the TourMIS database contains detailed statistics on European city tourism what makes its unique and highly useful. It is a rather young project that had started in 1999. The initiative to create such a database came from the European Travel Commission (ETC) experts due to their need to monitor tourism development in Europe, what was. For them this was very hard to achieve without adequate statistical data support. The idea was to create the most comprehensive, accurate and up-to date source of the European tourism statistics. The project was initiated by the Austrian National Tourist Office (ANTO) based on the proposal developed by the Institute for the Tourism and Leisure Studies at the Vienna University of the Economics and Business Administration. Subsequently, the Vienna University was put in charge of this project. As it is mostly financed by the ANTO and the ETC, the TourMIS is open to all users free of charge, although registration is required only for the protection of the web-site. Data collection, processing and dissemination is all done electronically, using the SQL language. All national tourism offices that are members of the ETC are, either monthly or annually, sending the data required electronically to Vienna. Data contains not only information on tourist arrivals and overnights by origin countries, but also on tourism accommodation, such as number of beds, occupancy rate and similar. The TourMIS database consists of two fundamental datasets about European tourism – one for each country as a whole, and the other for the cities and towns. Due the fact that the international country statistics are already collected and published by the WTO and the Eurostat, much greater value for users, as already pointed out, has city tourism statistics. Using online support system the TourMIS users can easily get official tourism data about the most important European cities. But it has to be stressed out that, despite all earlier efforts to harmonise international tourism statistical system, the problem of incomparability still exists, and users have to bear it in mind when using these data. However, in contrast to the WTO and the Eurostat databases, information from the TourMIS can be easily exported into other program, such as Excel, for further manipulation. For our readers we have selected city tourism data for 2002 as the most interesting. Among the eighty European cities that have submitted the total number of overnights, ten market leaders were: London (111 million overnights), Paris (33 mn), Dublin (19 mn), Rome (15 mn), Madrid (12 mn), Berlin (11 mn), Palma de Mallorca (10 mn), Barcelona (9 mn), Amsterdam (8 mn) and Vienna (8 mn). These were followed by Munich, Prague, Milan, Florence, Hamburg, Budapest, Brussels, Nice, Lisbon and Stockholm. In conclusion the TourMIS is one of the best source of information, especially on city tourism statistics which can not be easily found elsewhere. The TourMIS system will become even more important once the data collection across the countries becomes uniformed and the efforts to this end are already in progress.
