Transition from planned to market economy caused a wide social and economical changes in countries of Central and East Europe. In retailing, transitional states are characterized by privatization and opening of new retail companies and closure of some of the old retail chains. Another important process is an opening of the market for international retail chains. Mentioned processes are present in Croatia too, though emergence of foreign chains started a bit latter in comparison to other transitional state. This articles deals with the spatial distribution, commercial structure and functions of newly built shopping centres and hypermarkets in Zagreb. Research has included mapping of all newly built shopping centres and hypermarkets, classification of their commercial and other functions according to numbers of business premises in them, and questionnaire survey conducted in three shopping centres on different locations in Zagreb. Questionnaire survey has been done in order to understand how visitors perceive shopping centres concerning their functions and urban location.
