Sažetak
Ballast water tanks can be as large as auditoriums, and a single ship can carry over 150, 000 metric tonnes of water. Approximately 10 billion tones of ballast water are carried around the world annually. Ballast water tanks are usually filled in bays and estuaries, where there are high densities of planktonic species, making it very easy for organisms to get into ballast water tanks. There are an estimated 3000 species that are regularly transported in ballast tanks around the world, every day. Marine invasions are often difficult to detect until populations are quite high, at which point they may already be damaging the surrounding ecosystem. Also, there are probably many established exotic species that are just not recognized as being exotic. With some groups of organisms, especially very small organisms, a specialist is often needed just to identify them correctly.
