Sažetak
The present paper describes bathymetric distribution of medusae in the open waters of the Middle and South Adriatic Sea during the spring 2002. The principal aim of the paper, via comparison of all available data from the Middle and South Adriatic, is to examine the present medusan fauna and the hypotheses about persistence of bathymetric distributions and daily vertical migrations of hydromedusae and ingression of new species into the Adriatic Sea. In total, 28 species of hydromedusae (Anthomedusae:9 ; Leptomedusae:6 ; Trachymedusae:8 ; Narcomedusae:4) and one scyphomedusa were found. Haliscera bigelowi is the first record for the Adriatic Sea and Dicodonium adriaticum for its southern part. The cosmopolitan species Rhopalonema velatum, Aglaura hemistoma and Persa incolorata averaged 88% of entire medusan abundance and Mediterranean species Rhabdoon singulare and Solmissus albescens were numerous at the deeper stations. Species were found either in Southern or in Middle Adriatic, and their abundance is higher than in other regions of the Mediterranean Sea. There was a difference in species composition between near-shore and open sea stations. In general, daily species diversity and abundance was highest in the upper 200 meters and decreased with increasing depth. Time-scale vertical distribution suggests nocturnal vertical migration either into upper layers or into lower layers, but some species migrate in either direction. A few species do not show any vertical migration. Although light potentially triggers zooplankton vertical movements, our data suggest that foraging strategies may also influence the vertical migration of medusae.
