Sažetak
Zagreb surroundings, especially its western, southern and southwestern part, are characterized by intensive suburbanization and form a daily urban system of the city. Bistra is a small municipality located in the northwestern part of Zagreb urban region, 20 km from the inner city of Zagreb. Important state and regional roads pass through and by the territory of the municipality. Zaprešić motorway junction is located near Bistra's southern border. In 2001, 6, 098 inhabitants lived in 6 settlements of the municipality. There has been small but constant increase in number of inhabitants since 1850’ s ; the only decrease being after the World War I. Traditional economy has been the mainstay of population throughout that time. From mid-20th century the process of socioeconomic transformation began. The number and share of agricultural population has been decreasing rapidly. Simultaneously, until 1970’ s the total number of population had also been slightly declining. The process of growth of Zagreb urban region, which started at that time initiated immigration to Bistra. Until 1990’ s Bistra became strongly urbanized part of Zagreb urban region. The importance of agriculture has been minimized: in 2001 only 2.5 per cent of population was engaged in agriculture (compared to 69.2 per cent in 1961). Bistra's strong connections with Zagreb are best presented by the fact that 60 per cent of its active population works in Zagreb. A field research has been conducted in order to understand and explain reasons and trends in contemporary interactions between Bistra and Zagreb. The second most important question posed concerns growing importance of residential functions of Bistra. Questionnaire survey included 404 households chosen by systematic random sampling. The results indicated that solving the housing problem is the single most important reason for choosing Bistra as a dwelling place. Other important reasons include marriage and war migrations. After 1990’ s the largest share of immigrants came from Zagreb and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Daily commuting and other social reasons for frequent visits to Zagreb (shopping, cultural needs) are the best indicators of interactions between Bistra and Zagreb. Although Zaprešić, one of Zagreb's satellite towns, is closer to Bistra than Zagreb itself, its role has still not been recognized. The results of the conducted research indicate strong integration of Bistra municipality in Zagreb urban region and confirm the existing models of development of socioeconomic region.
