Sažetak
Arsenic is extremely toxic and carcinogenic element. Arsenic in drinking water is a result of geological composition of soil and anthropogenic activities. Millions of people worldwide are exposed to chronic arsenic poisoning through drinking water. In the Eastern Croatia region 200 000 people consume drinking water with arsenic concentration over 10 ppb, which represents the maximum contaminant level recommended by The World Health Organization. The effective methods of arsenic removal available today are coagulation, precipitation, membrane processes, ion exchange and adsorption. Removal of arsenic using various alternative adsorbents has been studied and they have exhibited various efficiency. The objective of this study was to explore the feasibility of hydrous ferric oxide on zeolite as an adsorbent for the removal of arsenic (V)-oxyanions from the water. Hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) has strong sorption affinity for the arsenic oxyanions from the water and was prepared using polymeric carrier- natural zeolite-clinoptilolite (Donje Jesenje, Croatia). Zeolite was saturated with Fe3+ -ions from the FeCl3 solution in acetate buffer (pH 3.6) and then transformed to HFO using thermo-chemical procedure (NaOH, NaCl, 50 °C). Important factors for the adsorption of arsenic were contact time, pH and arsenic concentration. Effect of zeolite granulation, as well as adsorption dynamic was also investigated. The obtained results were fitted with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms at 25 °C. Other ions present in the water also have impact on the arsenic adsorption and this study defined the impact of sulphate-ions.
