Sažetak
Istria has a long viticultural tradition and a significant number of old autochthonous, economically interesting varieties. However, all Croatian regions are presently faced with rapid erosion of the native germplasm, which is being displaced by well-known European cultivars. Recently, these indigenous varieties have regained importance due to their peculiar wine characteristics and their revalorisation is becoming a key aspect of the expanding national tourist industry. Until recently, however, use of these varieties has been restricted by the lack of high-quality propagation material. The objective of the present study was the evaluation of the sanitary state of six important indigenous varieties (white Istrian Malvasia ; red Teran, Muscat Rose of Poreč, Hrvatica, Borgonja ; Jarbola, white and red) through ELISA tests for six grape viruses. The investigation was performed during the general project of conserving grapevine genetic resources as well as clonal selection of the most commercially important Istrian native varieties. Since Croatia is faced with forthcoming EU membership, the fast establishment of mother blocks for indigenous cultivars is one of our main commitments. We report here the evidence of high incidence of virus diseases in Istrian grapevine cultivars. Geographically isolated, old native cultivars were generally less infected compared to recent planted ones. The influence on virus infection on grapevine growth and fertility has still to be clarified. Here, we point out the importance of reasoned sanitary selection in Istria as the main strategy permitting to limit the damages caused by the presence of virus diseases without decreasing the production potential and affecting biodiversity.
