Sažetak
Since the introduction of personal computer (PC) and related equipment, many jobs have seen a change in working conditions. The aim of the objective ergonomic analysis (Screen checker TCO 1986, Sweden) on 460 subjects who worked with PC for over 20 hours a week was to determine the adverse effects of the PC use on health and environment and suggest improvements (1).
The analysis data indicated that 40-80% of subjects complained of eye strain, musculo-skeletal and
psychological disturbances. The disturbances were more frequent in women and may be associated
with the type of job, work organization and general exhaustion. Sixty six percent of subjects complained of ergonomic deficiencies of the equipment and furniture while 72% complained of
inappropriate organization of work. The main preventive course of action for the workers at videoterminals would be the improvement of work conditions and work organization.
Applying the recommendations of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
and the Directives of European Union (2), the study lists a choice of actions and measures to reduce the adverse effects of the PC use in the physical and psychosocial working environment and work organization. These are:
1. Basic ergonomic recommendations in the choice of PC equipment (screen, keyboard, printer and mouse), office furniture (desk, chair, paper holder) and work environment (light, noise, temperature, space).
2. Training in ergonomically acceptable work activities and work habits (eye rest, regular change of position and activities), which are also applicable for the leisure time
3. Participation in work organization (control over proper job tasks, the distribution of work and repose, cooperation with colleagues)
(1) Recommendations of The Central Organisation of SalariedEmployees in Sweden, 1986.
(2) Council directive on the minimum safety and health requirements for work wit display screen equipment - Proposal for an Ergonomic Protection Standard, 90/270/EEC, OSHA 1995.
