Sažetak
The greatest achievement in biology over the past millennium has been the understanding of development of life and heredity. Genetic studies were, for a long time, based only on observations. Development of molecular biology techniques in 1960ties gave the opportunity for deeper insight into the mechanisms of heredity. These events have not only left the impact on basic research but also on education. In middle seventies of the last century there were a successful course of Experimental Biology in University of Zagreb at Faculty of Science, but an idea of Molecular Biology course arose. Year 1978 an eminent molecular geneticst dr. sc. Željko Trgovčević gave some special lectures of Molecular Genetics in frame of General Genetics for the students of Experimental Biology course. This can be regarded as the very beginning of the Molecular Biology Education at University of Zagreb. However, only in academic year 1984/85 course of Molecular Biology was established as an University degree program. Some professors from Faculty of Science, Division of Biology: Sibila Jelaska and Dražena Papeš (a part of Professor Zvonimir Devidé team), Nikola Juretić and Oskar Springer, as well as Željko Kućan from Division of Chemistry and dr. sc. Ž. Trgovčević have worked on curriculum of the new course, as well as on organization of a new Department of Molecular Biology.
