Sažetak
The aim of this work is to calculate net migration using a vital-statistical method, and to analyse its impact on the total population trends in Istria through three intercensal periods (1971-1981, 1981-1991, 1991-2001). Demographic development of Istria is markedly spatially polarised between inner (rural) and coastal (urban) Istria. Dominant demographic process on the level municipality-depopulation in the first analysed decade (1971-1981) was caused by negative net migration. A gradual reduction of negative demographic processes resulted in reduction of the number of municipalities with negative net migration to only seven in the last intercensal period (1991-2001). Moreover, in that period, the population number of the majority of municipalities increased under the influence of immigration, i. e. of positive net migration.
