Sažetak
Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), encapsulated DNA virus, is the causal agent of porcine multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), a novel disease of weaned pigs characterized by granulomatous enteritis, diarrhea, and growth retardation. PCV-2 is primarily replicated in tonsils and lymph nodes within monocytes/macrophages as predominant and target cells. The infected pigs had increased number of monocytes and decreased numbers of CD4+, CD8+ T cells and B cells. The aim of our study was to analyze by FCM the numbers of T cells and monocytes in the peripheral blood of 8- week-old pigs with PMWS reared in a intensive farm in Croatia. The principal group of 20 pigs was selected on the basis of the clinical/pathomorphological signs and detection of PCV-2 in lymph nodes by PCR. Ten PCR - negative pigs without clinical signs of the disease served as the controls. In the principal pigs a substantial decrease in the numbers of CD8+ cytolytic cells, CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ memory cells, CD4+, CD8-, CD25+ activated helper cells, CD4-, CD8+, CD25+ activated cytolytic cells, and CD3-SWC3+ monocytes was observed. The immunosuppressive effect of the virus is evident as determined by comparison of these findings with quantities of the respective cell subsets in the non-infected control pigs.
