Sažetak
Various samples of cellulose I (microcrystalline cellulose, pine wood and beech wood pulp, respectively) and cellulose II (viscose, modal, lyocell and polynosic fibers) were ball milled for 5 to 60 minutes. In order to quantify the degradation of the crystalline structures, caused by milling, wide-angle X-ray scattering studies were performed and the crystallinity of milled samples was determined as a function of milling time. The decay of crystallinity was interpreted in terms of kinetics. While the scattering curves of the various unmilled samples differed considerably in the position and intensity of reflections, the scattering curves of samples milled for a sufficiently long time turned out to be virtually identical, irrespective of the origin and crystal structure of the initial cellulose samples. These scattering curves exhibit only two diffuse maxima and obviously represent the scattering of amorphous cellulose.
