Sažetak
The aim of this study was to obtain the information about sexual maturity, annual reproductive cycle and minimal length at maturity of anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus (L.) in the Adriatic Sea. A total of 12, 752 anchovy specimens were collected monthly by purse seine from January 1986 to December 1990 in the Zrmanja River estuary (44º ; ; 15'N ; 15º ; ; 30'E), which is a nursery ground of the small pelagic fish species. This paper provides comparative information on the minimal length at maturity, L50 and L100 of 742 anchovy specimens in 1990 and 2003 as well. Total lengths of anchovy specimens ranged from 4.4 to 13.0 cm and weighed from 0.4 to 13.8 g. Length-frequency and gonad data (ripe, spawning, spent, with semi hydrated and hydrated oocytes) of 537 specimens were analysed during the peak of anchovy spawning period - in July and in August 1990 and other 205 specimens in May 2003. Length (total)-length (standard) relationship was estimated as well. Sex ratio was slightly different from the 1:1 ratio where the females were insignificantly predominated (♂ /♀ = 0.9). The period of reproductive activity was from April to October coinciding with the highest values of gonadosomatic index and weights of gonads as well as with the most developed states of gonads. The total length (TL) at 50% sexual maturity (L50) of these fish species was 9.0 cm and L100 = 11.5 cm in 1990. Minimal lengths at first maturity were lower in 2003: L50 was 8.2 cm and L100 = 10.0 cm. Highly significant correlation was found during both years of the investigations (r2 = 0.9537 ; SE = 0.0019 and r2 = 0.9861 ; SE = 0.0751) respectively.
