Sažetak
In present-day society and economy, rapid changes occur caused by the development of science, by the use of new technologies and by global processes. Intellectual capital and the application of knowledge create new products and impose global influence on countries as well as eco-systems of the Earth. The ecological balance of the planet Earth is becoming more and more threatened, while genetically modified organisms seem to be a big uncontrolled experiment the results of which cannot be foreseen. Tourism, too, has been taking its place within these global trends, in which process the prerequisite for a long-term development of tourism is the healthy and unpolluted environment with specific regional and local qualities, now increasingly required by tourists. The damaging effect of genetically modified food, against which some scientists sound a warning, could have a considerable impact on tourist trends. The purpose of this paper is to spotlight the connection between global trends, genetic engineering and tourism in order to create a social climate that would make it possible to open an unprejudiced debate on the good points and drawbacks of such trends.
