Also, there are the other factors, like properties of the adhesive type, properties of the adherends, bonding procedure, joint design and loading conditions. It is necessary to find an optimal lap length and optimal adhesive thickness for the bonded joint to be dimensioned properly. At these optimal values it is possible to reach a maximum load bearing capacity using a minimum quantity of applied adhesive. In the experimental work the influence of the lap length and adhesive thickness on joint strength was analysed considering the joints made of three types of adherends (aluminium, stainless steel and brass). All the bonded joints were made using a two-component high-strength engineering adhesive. As expected, the experimental investigation confirmed very strong influence of the considered parameters on strength characteristic of the joints. However, these characteristics depend strongly on adherend type involved. Obviously, the influence of the adherend deformational characteristics on joint strength is very significant. The optimal lap length has been achieved on specimens made of aluminium and brass. Increasing lap length over these values leads to decrease of joint strength. This behaviour agrees well with theoretical considerations. However, such behaviour was not found in the case of stainless steel bonded joints. This paper is a part of extended investigation of adhesive joints. In the further work, additional tests on stainless steel bonded specimens aiming to reach its optimal lap length, will be carried out. 6.
