On the childrens ward CH Split between the years 1985 to1994, 21 children were admitted with meningomyelocoele, 17 (81%) underwent surgical closure, 17 (81%) had hydrocephalus. Ventriculitis manifested itself with 12 (57%) , 7 (33%) children were treated by external drainage and interventricular instillation of antibiotics. Early surgical intervention along with a high risk of complications require intensive nursing care. Careful nursing technique is required to orotect the defect from infection. External ventricular dreinage and instillation of intraventricular antibiotics require skilled nursing technique during the post-operative phase of a child with meningomyelocele and associated hydrocephalus.
