Sažetak
The paper presents legal framework concerning environmental protection particularly in coastal areas. It points to the accession requirements for Candidate countries and legal challenges in the process of harmonization of Croatian legal system with that of the European Union. It gives out analyses of The Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), EU Eco-label Scheme, The EU Strategy for Integrated Costal Zone, and a new EU Water Framework Directive. The need for the legal framework system of environmental regulation in Croatia according to the European standards is emphasized. Pointed out is the fact that Stabilisation and Association Agreement represents a comprehensive contractual relation between EU and Croatia and also the importance of other EC instruments. Objectives are to contribute to the process of alignment of environmental legislation with acquis and to integrate sustainable development into all sectors through the use of environmental impact assessments.
