Sažetak
The beginning of the science of virology was marked by the discovery of the causal agent of tobacco mosaic disease at the end of the 19th century. Besides the virus concept, many fundamental concepts of molecular biology had the tobacco mosaic virus as the main research object. It was the first virus to be purified, the first to be reconstituted from its protein and RNA components, its coat protein sequence was the first viral protein sequence to be determined. Our understanding of molecular biology (overlapping and silent genes, subgenomic RNAs, RNA-dependent RNA-polymerase) gained much through the use of TMV. The Croatian virologists through their work on TMV also gave a contribution to this pool of knowledge. As one of the best known and the most thoroughly researched viruses, TMV will continue to serve as a research model giving answers to the pertaining questions considering molecular mechanisms of plant-pathogen interactions, cell signaling and RNA-trafficking in plants.
