Sažetak
Vertical D.C. Al-alloyed slab casting process has revealed certain numerous surface defects verified during the production practice itself. Their frequency of appearance could be registered to an admissible or inadmissible extent. A surface defect on an Al-casting is considered to be inadmissible if it could not be removed by means of subsequent tehnological scalping process, or in the downstream processing stages.This study deals with the most frequent surface defects as verified in the Al slab - casting process, i.e. the cold welds, "bleed-outs", tears, longitudinal cracks, scratches, bulges. Regular monitoring and assessment of the surface quality of Al-cast slabs and their correlation with relevant casting parameters make possible to reveal their interconnection pattern. These defects are influenced not only by parameters in terms of quantity but also by the the quality-linked parameters which characteristic is that they are unable to be duly PLC-programmed and printed out. Furthermore, a systematic approach in tracing of a particular defect and the appropriate measures to be taken render feasible the preparation of the Defect Survey which can be considered a contribution in educational upgrading programme of expert personnel as well as of the operators on the Casting unit.
