Sažetak
Professor Anton Švajger was a pioneer of mammalian embryology who contributed substantially to elucidation of the principles of early mammalian development. His main discovery, based on the fine method he devised for microsurgical separation of germ-layers, pointed out that primitive ectoderm (epiblast) is the source of tissue derivatives of all three definitive germ-layers. He investigated other important topics of contemporaneous mammalian developmental biology such as transdifferentiation, regeneration and advanced morphogenesis by in vivo or in vitro experiments. His contributions during 40 years of research and teaching were important for the worldwide recognition of the Zagreb School of Mammalian Embryology and in education of a great number of Croatian scientists and medical doctors.
