Sažetak
In analysing the history of a certain disease not only this particular disease should be investigated but related pathological conditions must be addressed that exist in a population at a given time. History and iconography of lupus erythematosus is presented in this paper. Processes of various origin characterized by ulceration or necrosis, were labelled lupus before mid-19th century (neoplastic, infectious, traumatic, etc) and no specific pathogenesis was implied then. This resulted in considerable confusion as the books of Willan, Alibert, Cazenave and Schedel as well of Hebra and others prove. From the theoretical point of view, we must constantly be aware in the whole of science, that theories are changing and that it is, in fact the obligation to challenge existing theories as to their truth and applicability. The story of the mix of different forms of lupus throughout many decades of the 19th century and the repeated questions of the past, as to a relation of lupus erythematosus to tubeculosis is proof of that.
