Sažetak
Doxycycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline discovered in 1966. It has a bacteriostatic effect in therapeutic concentrations. It enters bacteria through passive diffusion. It reversibly binds to 30S ribosomal subunit and thus inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins. It is effective against a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and especially against chlamydia and mycoplasma. Doxycycline is virtually completely absorbed after oral administration (ł90%). The plasma half-life is 16 to 20 hours. It penetrates most tissues and body fluids and is excreted mostly in feces. Gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It can also cause teeth discoloration, enamel hypoplasia and bone growth abnormalities in children Ł8 years of age and in fetuses. Doxycycline is regularly cited drug for the treatment of sexually transmitted urogenital infections because of its low price, spectrum of activity, twice a day dosage and good tolerability. Recommended dosage in sexually transmitted infections is 2x100mg for 7, 14 up to 20 days depending on the clinical syndrome, pathogen, and the duration of clinical symptoms present.
